Program Highlights
Global Strategies for HIV Prevention is a 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit organization whose mission is to implement international strategies to prevent HIV infection by means of strategic alliances with those who share in a compassion for alleviating the suffering of children.
Our activities incorporate the development of strategic approaches to pressing issues of HIV prevention, treatment and care. Working alongside faith based and nongovernmental organizations, we take advantage of our ability to act quickly and independently. Global Strategies for HIV Prevention has:
- Developed programs and strategies to prevent HIV transmission from mothers to their infants in communities that are underserved, neglected, and/or lack adequate resources.
- Established a "Save a Life" program for the purchase and/or delivery of antiretroviral drugs to prevent perinatal HIV transmission.
- Established mentoring relationships between expert medical advisors in developed countries and health care workers in developing countries to facilitate improved prevention strategies.
- Explored pilot programs for post exposure prophylaxis to prevent HIV infection of health care workers and sexually abused women and children.
- Sponsored focused workshops, conferences, education and training in developing countries on issues relevant to prevention of HIV transmission and directed toward community mobilization and countrywide implementation.
- Developed a knowledge base of critical information for health care workers in developing countries using CD ROM and Internet technologies for communication and distribution.
- Facilitate obtaining funds for collaborative approaches for non-profit organizations and NGOs engaged in HIV prevention internationally.
Program Highlights
Programs and Strategies To Prevent HIV Transmission From Mothers To Their Infants
- Developed a "Call to Action" signed on by over 500 international health care workers calling for a concerted international response for preventing HIV transmission from mothers to infants
Funded the initial perinatal HIV prevention program in the Dominican Republic and met with the Dominican Republic Health Ministry to encourage expansion of country-wide implementation. The Dominican Republic recently received a World Bank loan of $15 million for national HIV/AIDS programs.
Provided the first treatment in China for HIV infected women to prevent infection of their infants.
Developed the "Durban Declaration" signed on by over 5000 health care specialists from 120 countries, 13 Nobel Prize winners, and directors of leading research institutions, scientific academies and medical societies, declaring, "HIV causes AIDS and curbing the spread of this virus must remain the first step towards eliminating this devastating disease." Translated into French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Kiswahili and Hindi.
Developed a "Kampala Call to Action" signed on by over 600 participants from 52 developing countries at the third international conference on Global Strategies for the Prevention of HIV Transmission from Mothers to Infants. This document called for country wide implementation of perinatal HIV prevention programs and provision of treatment for HIV infected mothers and children
Provided antibiotic prophylaxis for HIV infected orphans and women in Kenya, Burundi, Uganda and India.
Provided expert opinion in South Africa's Treatment Action Council court petition that resulted in requiring the South Africa government to provide anti-HIV treatment for HIV infected pregnant women and their infants to prevent HIV infection.
Expanded a rural based training and care program in Uganda to develop programs to care for HIV infected women and orphan children within their communities working with tribal chiefs and traditional birth attendants.
Developing a collaborative approach to provide post HIV exposure prophylaxis treatment to prevent HIV infection of health care workers in developing countries.
- Developing post HIV exposure prophylaxis and care programs for sexually abused children to prevent HIV infection.
"Save A Life" For The Purchase Of Drugs To Prevent Perinatal HIV Transmission
- Received over $160,000 from the Presbyterian Church (USA) to purchase and distribute nevirapine to prevent perinatal HIV transmission. To date drugs, or funds to purchase drugs, have been distributed for an estimated 42,000 HIV infected pregnant women in 17 different countries.
Workshops, Conferences, Education, and Training In Developing Countries
- We sponsored a trilogy of international conferences on prevention of perinatal HIV Transmission from 1997 to 2001. They were held in Washington, DC; Montreal, Canada; and Kampala, Uganda. Each conference presented a scientific and political agenda that contributed to accelerated implementation of prevention programs and resulted in greater financial commitment from foundations, governments, NGOs, international organizations and faith based organizations. Over the past 2 years over $60 million has been committed by these organizations for programs to prevent HIV transmission from mothers to infants and provide treatment for HIV infected mothers and infants.
- Organized and funded HIV prevention workshops in Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, Malawi, India, China and the Dominican Republic to involve community leaders and influence local and national government public health programs. These workshops played a critical role in the expansion of HIV prevention programs within these countries
- The major co-sponsor of Kenya's first training program and graduation of Traditional Birth Attendants in HIV prevention and care. Supported an intensive training course for 360 Village Health Nurses in Namakkal, India
- Using Ugandan artists, developed a culturally sensitive booklet on: "Facts and Myths About HIV/AIDS" for use as a community educational tool. The booklet is being translated into 3 additional languages.
- Provided support to the International Justice Mission for their efforts to provide legal counsel for HIV infected woman and orphans as their inheritance rights are threatened.
- Supported "WIRED" to develop computer and Internet training for HIV/AIDS orphans in Kenya. Many of the orphans are HIV uninfected and require new skills for eventual independence.
- Supported a "Focus on Women" workshop and their participation in an international conference on Global Strategies for the Prevention of HIV Transmission from Mothers to Infants.
- Conducted a workshop for birth attendants at FAith Alive Clinic in Jos, Nigeria that culminated in obtaining resources build a new hospital and clinic for the dramatic increase in HIV infected patients
- Funded HIV component of an $800,000 Medical Training Center and HIV testing clinic at Heal Africa in Goma, Congo to educate health care workers, community and faith based workers to establish programs in HIV prevention and care. Funding was obtained from Christ Presbyterian Church in Edina, MN
Knowledge Base Of Critical Information For Health Care Workers In Developing Countries
- In collaboration with HIV InSite, University of California, developed a CD ROM on "Women, Children and HIV". The CD-ROM presents the equivalent of 5,000 printed pages of in-depth information on several categories such as counseling and testing, the care of women and children with HIV, prevention, and nutrition and infant feeding. Each category contains articles on topics ranging from guidelines and policy analysis from the World Health Organization or CDC to articles on community education and training, as well as supporting articles from major research journals. The CD also offers contact information for organizations in each topic area that can provide more information or training. The first edition was distributed to 2000 individuals in 52 countries. Version two, currently being developed will be distributed to 15,000 individuals and organizations worldwide.
Facilitated Obtaining Funds for Collaborators in HIV Prevention and Care
- Following an invitation to meet with the Chinese Academy of Preventive Medicine in 1999 and survey the HIV epidemic in China, organized and funded a congressional briefing with presentations by prominent Chinese scientists to draw attention to the rapidly emerging HIV epidemic. Arranged visits to key NIH institutes as well as international organizations with potential to provide resources to address the emerging epidemic in China.
- Participated in the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation meeting to define priorities for foundations supporting HIV/AIDS programs. Four major priorities were defined at this meeting -- Microbicides, vaccines, orphans, and prevention of HIV transmission from mothers to infants.
- Assisted individuals in Faith Based Organizations to develop plans for HIV prevention and/or treatment utilizing their infrastructure for education, training and care. These organizations include the Catholic Medical Mission Board, the Vatican Children's Hospital, the American Baptist Convention, Presbyterian Church (USA), the United Methodist Church, Samaritan's Purse, the Moravian Church of America, the Anglican Church of Tanzania, and the United Religions Initiative.
- Conducted the first Hope Walks raising $75,00 to support HIV treatment and care for 350 orphans at Children of Grace in Jina, Uganda
