Director of Development

Global Strategies for HIV Prevention seeks a highly accomplished professional to join its team as a Director of Development. Under direction of the Executive Director, the successful candidate will possess an understanding of the needs and interests of major and planned gift donors. The successful candidate will also have expertise in implementing development planning - including annual campaigns, donor cultivation, planned giving, donor communications, and event planning. S/he should be able to demonstrate a history of positive and nurturing working relations with board members, major donors, foundation representatives and colleagues.

Job Responsibilities:

The newly created position entails implementing elements of our existing development plan. In particular:

  • Design and implement methods for cultivating, soliciting and stewarding existing major gifts prospects
  • Develop major gifts and other annual campaigns
  • Develop fundraising materials and organize related programs/events
  • Cultivate and solicit donor prospects for gifts from $5K and above
  • Prepare and negotiate gift instruments ranging from moderate to high complexity; working with the Executive Director, President, Development Committee and Board of Directors as necessary to solicit the largest gifts.
  • Update the Executive Director and President on principal gifts visits, track and implement follow-up.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to ensure proper stewardship of donor gifts.

The achievements of this position have a major impact on the overall goals of the program.

Key Areas of Responsibility:

Development Planning and Donor Cultivation

  • Develop an understanding of the organization's mission and programs in order to effectively respond to donor inquiries.
  • Research and identify new donor prospects
  • Oversee the work of professional and support staff involved in the implementation of multi-component fundraising programs.
  • Lead donor vision trips to international program sites
  • Attend fundraising functions, meetings, and conferences
  • Serve on internal/external committees as a representative of the organization.
  • Guide implementation of technologies and social media to develop GenX/Y donor base

Grants management

  • Research grant prospects including guidelines and reporting requirements
  • Coordinate the grant writing process with the Executive Director and provide writing support for proposals

Database management & analysis

  • Oversee the ongoing maintenance and development of a constituent database
  • Conduct data analysis to assess the effectiveness and outcomes of all fundraising initiatives
  • Track results of all campaigns for reports to the Executive Director and Board of Directors

Qualifications

Experience:

  • Bachelors degree in related area required and/or equivalent experience/training
  • Minimum of 5-10 years’ experience in development/fundraising
  • Proven ability to meet predetermined goals and objectives through effective program/project planning, organization, execution and evaluation
  • Proven ability to meet or exceed fundraising goals and objectives, securing gifts of $5,000+
  • Preferred: Membership with Association of Fundraising Professionals, CFRE-Certified or certification in process

Knowledge:

  • Advanced knowledge of all aspects of fundraising, donor relations and public relations
  • Knowledge of relevant issues in global health and HIV/AIDS
  • Knowledge and experience using technology and social media to grow donor base

Skills:

  • Social and cultural sensitivity to positively work with diverse constituents in the HIV-infected community, with faith-based donors, and international implementing partners
  • Superb written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills, including social acumen to establish and maintain good working relationships internally and with outside constituencies • Advanced skill in delivering compelling presentations of organization’s goals/objectives and securing gifts
  • Moderate to advanced skill working with online donor management software (eTapestry)
  • Advanced analytical, critical thinking, problem recognition/avoidance/resolution skills
  • Ability to successfully complete a criminal background check
