Clinicians in Uganda and the DRC have voluntarily used NoviGuide, Global Strategies’ point-of-care neonatal medicine application, to complete more than 400,000 newborn assessments.
Each NoviGuide assessment guides clinicians through a structured evaluation to detect danger signs, identify their cause, and treat newborn illness using evidence-based guidelines.
NoviGuide 1.0 was completed in the mid-2010s and piloted in the Tororo region of Uganda as part of a UCSF initiative. With the release of version 2.5 in 2023, NoviGuide began scaling to dozens of clinics. The tool is now in version 2.6, and its adoption continues to expand across additional health facilities.
Global Strategies aims to reach 1,000,000 newborn assessments per year and to expand NoviGuide’s platform to address new areas of medicine.
Global Strategies is a California-based nonprofit organization that empowers communities in some of the world’s most neglected regions to improve the health of women and children. NoviGuide was inspired by Global Strategies’ long-standing programs and partnerships in eastern Congo.
Founded in 1999 by Dr. Arthur Ammann; merged in 2014 with the International Pediatric Outreach Project, founded by Dr. Theodore Ruel and Dr. Sadath Sayeed.
